Is your congregation facing a pastoral transition and now in the process of establishing -- or perhaps you have already established -- the Pastoral Search Team (PST)? Do you want to ensure the PST starts in the right footing and the process leads to a successful conclusion?
If so, let me share 30 years of expertise as a transition/interim specialist to help the congregation and its PST prepare for one of the most important decisions they will ever make.
Having a confidential, independent, and honest third-party Transitional Shepherd (TS) helping in this tenuous process BEFORE the PST begins its deliberations is crucial. It is vital in avoiding the serious conflicts that often appear during the PST deliberations.
The TS provides five critical functions. First, helps establish and clarify the expectations between the PST and its chief stakeholder -- the congregation. Second, assists in preparing the congregation to understand their important role during the search process. Third, encourages development of the PST’s search, interview, and selection "rules of the road" and strategies. Fourth, provides objective review of the pastoral position profile crafted by the PST on behalf of all stakeholders. Fifth, once the PST begins its formal deliberations -- but only when requested by the PST -- contributes objective insights, analysis, and observations in support of the PST’s seamless movement of the process towards its successful candidate selection.
None of the services I provide as a TS should be construed to suggest the role includes influencing in any way the selection of any candidate. Instead, as the TS, my role is to be a confidential, independent, and honest presence who is available to the PST before or anytime after their search process begins. My services are also available -- but only if and when requested by the PST -- during their formal deliberations to help ensure a seamless, healthy, and successful search process.
My services are primarily focused on congregations with either the absence of denominational interim support or who prefer an independent third-party consultant to assist the PST, as described.
